Motherboard and Removable Media Devices

A computer is made up of various physical components known as computer hardware. The hardware is used to install multiple of software and operating systems that can be used by the operator to perform the desired functions. Hardware is actually the stuff of a computer we can touch or see. A typical personal computer comprises of cases or chassis in tower shape and these are as follows:

Motherboard: it is the brain of the computer and in it the components are directly attached.

# CPU- it performs almost all the calculations of the computer and it helps computer to perform its function. It is cooled by the fans and the heat sink.

# Chipset- it helps to mediate communication between CPU and other components of the computer and the memory.

# RAM- it is shortened to Random Access Memory. It stores all the running applications and the current running OS.

# BIOS- the basic input output system includes power management and boot firmware. Its tasks handled by the operating system drivers.

# Internal buses- these helps to connect various internal components of the computer with the Central Processing Unit. Examples are PCI, SATA, ATA, VLB etc.

# External Buses- these buses supports the various ports for external peripherals. Example southbridge.

Removable media devices-

# CD- it is the most common type of removable media, and useful for music and data. These are CD-ROM drive and CD-Writer.

# DVD- it is a kind of CD but stores 12 times much more information such as DVD writer, DVD ROM drive and DVD RAM drive.

# Blue Ray Disc- it is a high density optical disc which can store 70 times much more data than CD such as BD-ROM drive, BD writer.

# Zip drive- it is an outdated medium capacity removable disk storage system.

# Floppy disk- it is also an outdated storage device with magnetic thin lining.
